Things to Consider Before Building a New Home
When it comes to deciding where you and your family are going to live, it is not a decision to take lightly. Whether you are a bachelor, empty nesters, raising teenagers, or just starting out, your home is the backdrop to countless memories and big moments in your life. You have a lot of options for a home, renting, buying, building, and so many in between. Building a new home is a great way to get almost everything you may want, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t come with some challenges and considerations.
- Building takes time. And we know you know that, but knowing the time it takes and experiencing the time it takes to build are two different things. At Jorndt Fahey, we always set realistic timelines for both our craftsmen and our clients, but that doesn’t mean that hiccups don’t come around. Weather, permits, supply delays and other unexpected situations can come up but at Jorndt Fahey, we try our best to jump right back on schedule.
- It is stressful. Buying a home means house hunting, bidding wars, and waiting for inspections and closing. When you build a house, some of that is alleviated, but that doesn’t mean other stress isn’t involved. Timing hiccups, budget, and construction headaches are still something to consider.
- It is a part time job. You hired builders for a reason. You did your research, did all the planning, you trust them. But that doesn’t mean you won’t have to put in some work too. Expect to spend time picking out fixtures and finalizing other design elements. And whether or not you need to, you’ll want to spend time around your home as well because, it’s your home! You want to be there!
- There are still out of pocket costs. You may have taken out a construction loan for your home, but that doesn’t mean that little things won’t still need to be purchased such as upgraded fixtures, lighting, paint, insurance, and utility connections, though some of these things may still be included. At Jorndt Fahey, we will discuss all of these up front because even though we like fun surprises, we avoid bad surprises at all costs!
- You may change your mind on design choices, and that’s okay. Like we said, you’ll spend a lot of time at your new home while it’s being built and while you’re there you may take a look at some of your choices and decide you don’t like the combinations you chose. That’s okay! We want your home to be exactly what you have always dreamed of and picking swatches and samples is very different than seeing things up on your walls.
- You will get frustrated. Building a home is a tiring and lengthy process. You will get frustrated with yourself, your spouse, your builders. That’s okay. Just remember to take a step back and reexamine your frustration before letting it get to you. Avoid lashing out to prevent strain on your relationship. Be prepared for frustration to make it just a little easier!
There are so many pros and cons to building a home. So many that we couldn’t even add them all, but that doesn’t mean it is all worth it in the end. With a brand new build you get to start fresh and get almost everything you’ve ever dreamed of. Our designers and builders have many years of experience and training to prevent as much added stress as we can! The stress and frustration that comes from building a house is only temporary, so do not let it deter you from making the decision to build your dream home.
